I made my way to Honduras by a harrowing speed boat ride from Belize. After a comedy of After 9 weeks of scuba diving in Honduras, it was time to break the spell. Since I had a very important rendezvous planned for Machu Picchu (more on that later), I flew direct to Lima to spend a couple of adventurous weeks exploring the country. Despite getting my bag stolen (it still pains me deeply to this day that of all things I lost was my journal), Lima was an intriguing mix of grit and panache. (Hostel Kokopelli in Lima (now long gone) is to this day one of the best hostels I’ve ever stayed in.)
I then went sandboarding (like snowboarding) on sand dunes in Huacachina. I saw the wildlife of the Ballesta Islands. I walked the streets of idyllic Arequipa. I hiked down Colca Canyon and the 3000 meters straight up out again. It only prepared me for the best hike in my life a few days later - Huayna Picchu....
